The 5 Stages of Spiritual Growth Every Christian Should Know (1 Corinthians: Part 1)
Series: 1 Corinthians: A Church in Need of Discipleship Topic: Early Church Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:1–9, Acts 18:1–28
1 Corinthians: Part 1
1 Corinthians 1:1-9
In this introduction, we explore the historical context of Corinth—a morally corrupt city much like modern Las Vegas or New York—and discover how God planted a church right in the heart of spiritual darkness. Paul's letter addresses a congregation struggling with division, sexual immorality, lawsuits among believers, and drunkenness during communion. Sound familiar to some modern church struggles.
The central teaching revolves around the Discipleship Wheel—a powerful framework showing five stages of spiritual maturity: Spiritually Dead, Infant, Child, Young Adult, and Parent. This model helps us understand where we are in our spiritual journey and challenges us to keep growing rather than staying stuck in immaturity. Paul's approach to confronting the Corinthian church is masterful. Despite their serious problems, he begins with thanksgiving, reminding them of their positional sanctification—their secure status in Christ—before addressing their need for progressive sanctification. This "sandwich approach" of encouragement, correction, and hope provides a model for how we should disciple others with both truth and grace.
