When You Think You're Standing Strong, Be Careful (1 Corinthians: week 19)

Series: 1 Corinthians: A Church in Need of Discipleship Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1–13

What happens when you become too comfortable in your walk with God? In 1 Corinthians 10:1–13, the Apostle Paul gives Christians a serious warning:

“If you think you’re standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall.” Spiritual overconfidence can become dangerous when we stop taking sin seriously, become comfortable with temptation, or assume that because we have experienced God’s grace, we no longer need to be careful about how we live. In this message, Pastor Paul walks through 1 Corinthians 10 and looks at the Israelites as an example of what can happen when God’s people become too comfortable. They experienced God’s presence, His provision, His protection, and His miracles—and yet many of them still turned toward sin and were disqualified from the race God had called them to run. Paul highlights four specific dangers: **idolatry, sexual immorality, testing God, and grumbling and complaining.** These warnings were recorded for our benefit so that we can learn from the mistakes of those who came before us rather than having to learn the hard way ourselves. But this passage isn't only a warning. It is also an incredible encouragement.
